What Is a Banana Boat?

A banana boat is a long, inflatable tube shaped like—you guessed it—a banana. Experience a thrill as our boat captain pulls you across the water at exciting speeds, cutting across the wake and making quick turns that keep you laughing and bouncing along the entire time.

You’ll sit upright for the duration of the ride, and it takes a fair amount of core and leg strength to maintain balance and hold on. But don’t worry, if you fall off, we’ll swoop back to pick you up immediately, so you don’t miss any of the fun.

Why People Love Banana Boats

Of our two most popular add-ons, this is the one that’s best for groups. You’re side-by-side with your friends and family, laughing and sharing the experience together as you bounce and try to stay on. It makes for incredible shared memories you’ll be reminiscing about long after your trip is over.

Quick details

  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Group size: 2–6 riders (3 per side)
  • Age: 4+
  • Price: $59
  • Schedule: Every 30 minutes, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

What is a Bumper Tube?

Oahu bumper tube water activity

A bumper tube is a round or oval inflatable that you lie down on while being pulled behind a boat. Think classic speedboat river tubing, but on the open ocean. You’ll catch air as you bounce over the wake and will have to hold on tight to stay put! If you’re looking for speed and thrill, this is the activity for you.

Why People Love Bumper Tubes

The adrenaline rush is the biggest sell for our Bumper Tube ride. It’s for people who want to feel like they’re flying across the water, where the unpredictability of never knowing when the next hairpin turn or twist is coming is half the fun.

Quick details

  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Group size: 2–6 riders
  • Age: 4+
  • Price: $59
  • Schedule: Every 30 minutes, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Key Differences at a Glance

If you’re deciding quickly, here’s the simplest way to think about it:

Banana Boat

  • Sit upright
  • More social, shared experience
  • Requires balance and core strength
  • Slightly longer ride

Bumper Tube

  • Lie down
  • Faster, more individual thrill
  • Less balance required, but more impact from waves
  • Shorter, more intense ride

Which One Is Right for You?

This really comes down to your group. Take stock of everyone’s abilities and note things like:

  • Age – Younger kids may have a harder time holding on, or they may not be ready for the pace of a bumper tube
  • Physical Limitations – Things like bad backs, weak upper body strength, or sensitivity to motion sickness may make one activity better than the other, or could mean you should stick to one of our more easy-going activities like the Sub-Scooter tours.
  • How Many People Are in Your Group: While each ride is good for 2 to 6 riders, the Banana Boat is best for groups, and the tube is better for couples.

Safety: What to Expect

Both rides are operated with safety as a priority. Our Island Water Sports Hawaii team ensures:

  • Life jackets are provided (and required)
  • You’ll be guided by a USCG-certified captain and crew
  • Clear instructions are given before each ride
  • You’re positioned correctly before the activity begins

Restrictions apply for both rides:

  • No medical conditions that could be aggravated
  • Not recommended during pregnancy
  • Weight limit: 350 lbs

Pro Tips to Make Your Ride Even Better

Regardless of which activity you choose, there are a couple of things that can make a big difference to the overall experience:

  • Wear goggles – Nothing is worse than burning saltwater spraying in your eyes while you’re trying to enjoy the ride
  • Opt for the GoPro footage – You’ll want to relive everyone’s experience
  • Pair it with a Longer Excursion – Our most popular activities, the Sub-Scooter Tour and the SeaBob Tour, let you leisurely explore beneath the surface. Both the Banana Boat and Bumper Tour add-on activities are the ideal way to finish your time on the water with a bit of wild-ride fun.
