Three days isn’t nearly enough time to spend on Oahu, but we’re firm believers in leaving some room in your vacation plans for less structured days. After all, you’re supposed to be getting a break from the hustle and grind!
Whether you’re island-hopping and need to pack a lot into a short time, or you’re just looking for a helpful guide for a few days of your stay, this unforgettable Oahu 3-day itinerary covers everything from historical sites and scenic hikes to underwater adventures and cultural feasts. Follow it to a T or pick and choose the activities that sound the most exciting; either way, you’ll have an incredible visit.
To maximize each day, this itinerary assumes you’ve already arrived and will have three full days on the island versus one day that’s partially dedicated to travel.
Day 1: Waikiki Beach, Food Trucks, and a Cultural Experience
If you only have three days in Oahu, starting with Waikiki Beach is a no-brainer. The golden sand, deep blue water, and lively atmosphere make it one of the most famous beaches in the world. Whether you want to try surf lessons, go bodyboarding, paddle a canoe, swim in the warm Pacific, or simply enjoy the ocean views with a coffee in hand, Waikiki delivers.
Lunch at Ohana Hale Food Truck Park
A short 10–12-minute walk from the sand brings you to Ohana Hale Food Truck Park, one of Honolulu’s best spots for casual, delicious eats. With local vendors serving everything from spicy garlic prawns to poke bowls, tacos, and shave ice, there’s something for everyone—especially if your group has different tastes.
- Hours: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. (hours may vary by vendor)
- Cost: Most meals $12–$18
- Tip: Bring cash; some vendors may not accept cards
You can eat at the picnic tables on-site or carry your meal back to the beach for a toes-in-the-sand lunch.
Cultural Afternoon: Iolani Palace or Byodo-In Temple
After lunch, dive deeper into the island’s history and culture.
Option 1 – Iolani Palace
Located just 18 minutes from Waikiki, Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1882, it was home to Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, King Kalākaua.
The guided and self-led tours give a fascinating look into Hawaii’s political history, royal traditions, and architectural elegance.

Option 2 – Byodo-In Temple

For a more serene cultural experience, head 30 minutes from Honolulu to the Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a 950-year-old Japanese temple located in Uji, Japan. Set against the lush Koʻolau Mountains, this non-practicing Buddhist temple is a peaceful escape with koi ponds, meditation niches, and the iconic Phoenix Hall.

Day 2: Ocean Adventures with Island Water Sports Hawaii + Diamond Head Hike
Day 2 is all about embracing Oahu’s marine life and adrenaline-pumping fun. We recommend starting with one of our signature water tours in Maunalua Bay before capping off the afternoon with a hike to Diamond Head.
Morning: Submarine Scooter or Seabob Tour
Our Submarine Scooter Tour is unlike anything else on the island. You’ll ride a self-propelled underwater scooter that lets you breathe naturally inside a clear dome while gliding alongside tropical fish, spotting sea turtles, and exploring coral reefs up close.
Prefer something faster? The SeaBob Tour combines snorkeling with a motorized water sled that lets you zip across the surface or dive down to see marine life in motion. Both tours include a scenic boat ride with panoramic ocean views, light refreshments, and time to snorkel and swim after your tour.
Add-On Fun: Bumper Tube or Banana Boat Ride
Keep the energy high with a 15-minute Bumper Tube ride or a 20-minute Banana Boat ride. These family-friendly options are pure fun and the perfect way to round out your morning in the bay.
- Banana Boat: $59 per ride, up to 6 people
- Bumper Tube: $59 per ride, up to 6 people
- Requirements: Ages 4+, not pregnant, under 350 lbs
Lunch Near Maunalua Bay
Head to Kona Brewing Co.’s Hawaii Kai Pub for a casual waterfront lunch—one of the best things to do at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Fuel up with a cold drink and a grilled steak burrito, juicy burger, or tasty fresh fish sandwich before your afternoon hike.
Afternoon: Hike Diamond Head Crater

From Maunalua Bay, it’s about a 20-minute drive to Diamond Head State Monument. This 1.5-mile round-trip hike takes 1–2 hours, depending on pace, and rewards you with stunning views of Waikiki Beach, the south shore, and the sprawling Pacific.
- Hours: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. (last entry at 4:30 p.m.)
- Admission: $5 per person, $10 parking per vehicle
- Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and shoot for later in the day to avoid the heat
